Is lip-syncing okay... for a singing contest? Turns out there's a Milli Vanilli situation over at 'The X Factor,' which just got outed for allowing contestants to lip-sync on stage.
We're not sure how widespread this is, though the following clip clearly shows contestant LeRoy Bell 'singing' before his lips actually move. In fact, the mic isn't even raised to his lips when the part begins.
This is not an isolated case. Fox Television has now admitted that singers are indeed lip-syncing, but insists that this is only in limited, group ensemble situations. "For the group ensemble performance, the vocals are pre-recorded to allow acts to concentrate on preparing for their own live competitive performances on Wednesdays - this is also no different to what other competition shows do for ensemble performances," a Fox representative told Digital Music News. "All survival songs are performed live, with just a backing track."

The rep also noted that other shows - most suggestively American Idol - also feature lip-syncing. Who knows the exact extent, though viewers are likely to be scrutinizing contestants for signs of faux-vocalizing ahead.
More as it develops.

Anyone with a decent ear can tell you these group performances on Xfactor are lip-synced... Same for American Idol the last couple of seasons.
Might be less noticeable if they didn't pitch correct it too (Lakoda Rayne anyone?)...
Last night was particularly amusing - LeRoy was a week late moving his lips and then the one person singing (rapping) live screwed up! (Astro...)

This is nothing new, American Idol has been doing it for years. Its just for their group numbers, of course he wont do that during his live performance..don't get what all the uproar is about really..

JacksonL Friday, November 04, 2011
@Chris
You say it's only for the group singing, but how do you know? We only found out about this because they got BUSTED. So X Factor probably just made up a story---- who knows if it's in other partsof the show.

Karen Friday, November 04, 2011
so yes.. even in the big groups like intisty if you notcie not all the mics where one when the kids started shouting out to their fans.. you couldt hear anyone .. this was after their "live" performance.. i knew there was just a few in that group actully singing

Thought we even heard the autotune pull to the wrong note. Unfortunately, this all makes sense now.

So, what's the point in having a show with "live singers" if the singers aren't singing live?? GOOD GRIEF!!!!! REAL singers can throw down LIVE!! My two cents worth! Jan Smith, Owner, Jan Smith Studios in ATL, GA

Let's add the Stereo Hogzz to the Milli Vanilli list. Check out their performance of "Emotions". Apparently, the backing track contains not only music, but background vocals as well. The group members (if they actually recorded the vocals) should have known when to bring the mics to their mouths, but they didn't. The only one with a live mic for that "survival song" was the poor guy they ALWAYS lean on to sing lead.

Warren Monday, November 07, 2011
I agree. From the headline, I was hoping this article would discuss the Stereo Hogzz as well. Their strong harmonies definitely seemed to be coming from the backing track and not the group themselves in their elimination song. Shouldn't that be the real scandal.

As for as the grop show is concerned it is nearly impossible to get a decent sound with that many voices moving around and singing the same unisen parts. The sound levels alone would be near impossible to blend live.
As for the live rapping is that singing or jive talking? Same song Same verse could be better but it's gonna get worse!!! Not much talent to it.

Lip sync bots who can't even play along with this karaoke business. How pathetic.
