Updated, Thursday, 1/27: RootMusic CEO J. Sider emailed us to say, "no deal between RootMusic, Lady Gaga and Facebook," see 3rd paragraph.
How do you top a splashy promotion involving Katy Perry and Facebook? Lady Gaga, that 's how. Bam!
But the deal points on this tie-in are still being put together, according to those whispering at Midem. And, the exact nature of this 'serious collaboration' remains unknown. But it looks like Facebook will merely be the platform on which we play - meaning, the mega-network will remain mostly hands-off on the promotion, according to sources.
In that spirit, it looks like this may involve RootMusic, the fresh-faced group led by J. Sider that keeps coming up in casual Cannes conversation. It's a Facebook play with $2.3 million in hand, so the chatter is natural, but a Gaga collaboration would throw things over the top. Sider, quite the earthy counter-statement to Cannes, declined to comment to Digital Music News, except to point to a number of promotions ahead. Later, Sider clarified over email that there is "no deal between RootMusic, Lady Gaga and Facebook."
Others are more talkative, and RootMusic has become the center of lots of speculation. A huge criticism of the RootMusic approach has been its focus on BandPages, which seem more reminiscent of MySpace Music than the feed-driven Facebook. But a far bigger concern comes from Facebook itself, which could always decide to end the party. "I've seen it happen with Google," one British investor told Digital Music News. "They can literally put businesses out of business overnight by changing the rules or deciding to build it all themselves."
Others see a well-calculated risk. After all, Mohr Davidow Ventures is gambling with $2.3 million - not $20.3 million - so why not? Meanwhile, separate sources are pointing to a rather laissez-faire approach by RootMusic backers, an attitude that is almost as hard to find these days as the money itself.
