Ad-Supported Gets More Support; Sony BMG Licenses We7

Sony BMG has now become the first major label to license ad-supported We7, a nice jolt for the Oxford-based startup.  But the deal only involves streams, not downloads, and is limited to the UK.

We7, cofounded by Peter Gabriel, is part of an emerging class of companies committed to seems-like-free, ad-powered content.  That has already received some consumer traction, though major labels have been slow to authorize their content.

The Sony BMG deal features streaming, on-demand content with short, prefixed advertisements.  On the download side, We7 offers a catalog of one million tracks, and the company served its two millionth download last month.
