LimeWire has now launched a beta version of its DRM-free download store, a move that follows an initial announcement in August. The heavily-used P2P is currently battling a major recording industry lawsuit, though the legal store steers the company towards friendlier waters. The paid store does not involve swapping, and delivers content directly from LimeWire servers.
The file-sharing giant has not indicated when the store will exit its preliminary beta phase. Overnight, the store was pulled for maintenance, an indication that early-stage issues are being resolved. Currently, the store is not being publicized from the application website. The company is still negotiating content deals, and recently finalized an agreement with Redeye Distribution. Other partners include Iris Distribution and Nettwerk Music Group.
LimeWire is offering downloads as one-off, a-la-carte downloads, or packaging the downloads within monthly subscriptions - a model that resembles an approach by eMusic.
