Independent online music store eMusic is now stepping into the talent-scouting business. The craft of A&R - or artists and repertoire - remains one of the most tricky aspects of the music industry, though independent labels and tastemakers frequently find the hottest new artists. In that light, eMusic announced Tuesday that three of its hand-picked artists have been signed to independent label deals, a nice start. "eMusic has proven to be the only digital music service dedicated to discovering and launching new talent," the company declared.
The action is happening through eMusic Selects, a boutique side-project for the retailer. "When we started eMusic Selects, our goal was to help young artists gain deserved attention, both from eMusic's subscribers and the greater independent music world," explained Yancey Strickler, senior editorial director at eMusic. The selected artists are High Places (Thrill Jockey); Crystal Stilts (Woodsist, Slumberland); and Deastro (Ghostly International). Those artists, as well as Breathe Owl Breathe, are being featured by eMusic at a September 11th gig at Le Poisson Rouge in New York.
