MySpace Music: "No Matter What This Month"

A revamped, heavily-hyped MySpace Music is definitely coming soon, according to chief executive Chris DeWolfe.  "We are launching no matter what this month," DeWolfe told Michael Arrington during a recent interview at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco.  The beefed-up destination, the subject of a splashy pre-launch announcement, is now attracting attention for its delayed arrival.

That includes an empty top slot, the result of a fruitless CEO search.  Sources have pointed to numerous overtures and interviews, though DeWolfe indicated that the ship may set sail without a captain.  Instead, DeWolfe and chief operating officer Amit Kapur are likely to shepherd the initiative, at least at the onset.  "We didn’t get a placement firm until a few weeks ago," DeWolfe admitted.

Separately, once source pointed to a destination that is "not really ready," though another outlined a gradual release process.  "They are going to slowly add new features, instead of launching everything at once," the source noted.

That reaffirms earlier guidance by DeWolfe himself, who discussed the project with Digital Music News in April.  "We are going to introduce things as we finish them," DeWolfe said.  The site will tightly integrate ecommerce aspects into artist pages, and share revenues with equity partners Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, and Warner Music Group.
