The face of Apple is Steve Jobs, but the brain trust behind Jobs runs deep.  That includes Tony Fadell, a driving force behind the iPod and iPhone who is now leaving Apple according to a Wall Street Journal report.  The senior vice president of the iPod division is departing for unspecified personal reasons, and will be replaced by former IBM executive Mark Papermaster.  Incidentally, IBM is actually suing Papermaster, citing breach of a non-compete clause.

The Fadell legacy is a strong one.  The iPod has sold over 160 million units, and the iPhone sold 6.9 million units during the last quarter alone.  Fadell was also thought to be a possible successor to Steve Jobs.
