A disastrous September has now spilled into October, according to Nielsen Soundscan data reported by Coolfer. US-based albums dropped a massive 19.4 percent year-over-year, based on an already-depressed 2007. In September, sales slipped 20.4 percent, a figure that now appears to be part of a larger downturn. Cumulative figures for the year place album sales at a more mild, 12.7 percent below 2007, a number that raises serious concerns over holiday expenditures.
September releases included Death Magnetic from Metallica, The Recession by Young Jeezy, and Year of the Gentleman by Ne-Yo. October featured a smashing Black Ice by AC/DC, which delivered 784,000 first-week units. But outside of those successes, a number of negatives appear to be accelerating the sales decline. That includes decreased consumer confidence and spending power, narrowing Wal-Mart shelf space, and continued consumer movement away from physical music purchases.
